This Saturday will see us enjoying a day trip on Puffing Billy, dancing in the beautiful surrounds of the Dandenongs, from Belgrave to Lakeside and back to the Paradise Hotel in Clematis.
On Sunday afternoon, come find us at the Micawber Tavern in Belgrave.

Special thanks go to the Mountain Goat brewery for their sponsorship this year, offering us a keg of their own Steam Ale to assist with the festivities on Saturday night.

Saturday, 26th November
10am: Puffing Billy station in Belgrave, dancing on platform.
10:30am: Depart Belgrave on Puffing Billy.
11:30am: Arrive Lakeside for a short dance spot.
12:30pm: Depart Lakeside on Puffing Billy. .
12:40pm: Arrive Clematis. Dance around a bit.
Lunch at the Paradise Hotel, followed by more dancing.
4:45pm: Depart Clematis on Puffing Billy. .
5:30pm: Arrive in Belgrave.
Some dancing in Belgrave whilst folks are shuttled back to Mt Morton camp for the Ale proper.

And sure enough, here it is,
though I look at it askance,
For what on earth would make them call it
The Helston Furry Dance?

Excuse the doggerel, I was inspired after writing the title of the update.
I truly did meet a man in Beechworth, named Ken, who was kind enough to tell us we looked like we were having a great time and he'd enjoyed watching us dance.

He mentioned that his sister had been to Cornwall and purchased a pamphlet in a little Cornish town called Helston and it described the traditions of the Helston Furry Dance, traditionally performed on May 8th to celebrate the triumph of St Michael over the Devil in a battle for the town. It's a grand processional through the town, with a song to be sung by the choir at various points about town.
"In his Tour through the whole island of Great Britain (1724-1726) Daniel Defoe observes of the Helston custom that "The Festival is called the Furry and the dance the Faddy."
"Furry possibly relates to the Latin 'feria' - a holy day or feast day."

Thankyou Ken, I'll be posting a letter to you tomorrow to thank you for your thoughtful gift.

So here are the women in the mill, in these sorts of conditions, very cramped, unable to stop for a moment and lose pace with the machine, of they'd lose their job, or worse, and they couldn't even hear themselves speak. The only thing they could do was tap their feet and very cleverly they tapped their feet to mimic the machines around them."

May Day & Kellybrook Cider Festival

Brandragon had its traditional May Day foot-up at All Nations Park in Northcote. The beautiful crisp morning was punctuated by the wheeze of melodeons, the tootle of recorders, the beating of drums, the jingle of bells and the stomp of feet as the dragons tried to get some warmth back into their bodies as well as the world. Once the sun had risen and their Morris duty was done, the dragons settled in for their traditional opulent breakfast. It was a great effort to sample all that was on offer, but well worth it since everything was delicious.

After scattering to attend to some morning obligations (like finding more coffee), the dragons reconvened at Kellybrook winery to dance with the Britannia Morris Men at the Kellybrook Cider Festival.

The weather was mild and perfect, the audience appreciative, and the scrumpy and apple juice flowed freely, guaranteeing an excellent time for all. Our thanks go to BMM for making us welcome to this lovely event.

We'll be dancing up the sun this Sunday, May 1st at 6:30am, on the hillock in All Nation's Park, Northcote.
Come join us and bring something to share for breakfast as we ensure the return of the sun in the northern hemisphere for another year. I suppose the momentum it gains is important for us as well...

And if you're so inclined, come see us dance alongside the Britannia Morris Men at Kellybrook Winery's Cider Festival from 11am. It's a great little festival with fresh apple juice and traditional farmhouse 'scrumpy' cider available on the day.

National Folk Festival 2011

Thanks to all who made the National Folk Festival a huge success this year. Once again a fantastic time was had by all; dancing, singing and folking with sides from all around Australia.
We danced a great set on the Piazza and met our first true Morris fan-girl at the workshop while teaching Ducks in the Privy. Tara was so keen that she jumped up to dance ''Maid of the Mill' with Britannia and Adelaide Morris men and she even collected our signatures on her program when we met her at a Contra dance later in the festival!

The Massed Morris looked fantastic this year with up to six sides at once getting up to dance their own traditions or variations of a well known dance. It's a great sight to behold 40 dancers waving sets of sticks or hankies, in time with a massed orchestra of musos. As Graeme noted, it gives a real impression of the scale of Morris at the festival. Morris is not just a small group of dancers wandering around performing at different spots, it's a large group of dancers who have a great contribution to make to the festival.

With St George's day in the middle of the festival this year it was great to get the Dragon out again, with the Ragged Band Border side bringing along a member dressed as St George for a parade about the festival site. We danced a Churchtown processional with Albion Fair (Sydney) and South-East Northwest (Brisbane/Toowoomba) accompanied by the Ragged Band (Brisbane) and other street performers from the festival in a parade of costumes and music.The highlight of which would have to be the photogenic, costumed small children helping to carry the Dragon's tail.

I've seen a lot of English Northwest sides and you guys are really good... I love seeing you put so much energy and enthusiasm into your dancing... You manage to be inclusive and maintain a great standard.

Marysville - 9th April

Gallipoli Park in Marysville was re-opened with a reflective garden and amazing new kid's playground. The committee of the kindergarten requested Brandragon come along to dance in the space and liven up a potentially dull official day. We had a ball dancing about the paths of the playground, with a trail of children bobbing along behind us. The kids then went on to plant a garden of reeds in the creek bed alongside the park, claiming the space as their own

Did I mention how amazing the playground is? It has a 'fort' with a hand-pump feeding an Archimedes screw which can be turned to raise water to a trough which feeds a mill wheel. This is kid's play equipment! I love it.

Lavandula Harvest Festival 2011

Brandragon's first dance out for the year provided to be a surprising success - due to the absence of a few stalwarts, we put the call out and we were joined by some of our friends from Red Raven. The weather was nice and balmy for the first time in years, enabling us to get a lot of dancing in, and teaching some of th...e adult visitors to Lavandula a dance for a change! Henry of Harcourt were very sadly missed, but as always we stopped in at Keating's in Woodend to avail ourselves of the offerings from Holgate Brewery. A big thanks to everyone who came out for the day!

Practice

We practice every Monday night at the Clifton Hill Hotel, 89 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill. You can catch the number 86 tram and get off at stop 23 which is right outside the pub, or a Hurstbridge or an Epping train will get you to Clifton Hill station which is a 10 minute walk away. If you're driving there's normally plenty of parking.
Practice starts at 8pm, out in the Emerald Room (it's the back room, or ask at the bar).
Last practice at the Clifton Hill hotel for this year will be December 7th, with the Christmas picnic in the Edinburgh Gardens on December 13th.

Beechworth Celtic Festival

This weekend was our first Beechworth Celtic Festival and I very much hope it's the first in a long succession because we had a fantastic time performing for receptive audiences and watching some excellent dancers and musicians.

We worked hard for our money and ran a workshop, danced our usual processional number in the parade, did 2 x 40 min. stage sets, including a solo step clog demo, and busked on both days - lots of thanks to the handful of Ravens who added colour and numbers and stick and hanky Cotswold style. There's something about a chook with a morris dancer stuck up its bum that really appeals to a crowd.

The performance sets included brief workshops to encourage the audience out of their seats and we had a lot of fun teaching elements of Speed the Plough and Churchtown to some very cute little tykes and keen adults.

The availability of Bridge Rd Brewer's stock was a definite highlight of my festival. The Chestnut Pilsener was a welcome drop after dancing and the Beechworth Pale Ale went down smoothly later in the evening.

The leaf-shaped badges and earrings of a local jeweller were so popular with the rest of the side that we're now a walking advertisement for them.

We're looking forward to future festivals, with some possible joint performances with Violindigo students and hopefully one or two of the fantastic pipe bands we saw at the festival. Who could pass up the opportunity to perform processionals in the parade to a full pipe band?

Euroa Wool Week Festival and Parade

A handful of us escaped Melbourne on Friday night to enjoy a balmy evening in the beer garden of the Seven's Creek Hotel, conveniently close to the caravan park we booked into overnight, with a further contingent arriving before the Wool Week Parade on Saturday morning.

The weather was kind and we had a fine morning for the parade, led by a contingent of Imperial Storm Troopers escorting Darth Vader, closely followed by the town band costumed as Princess Leia; every member with a different interpretation of 'buns' over their ears, and most of the children in town in Star Wars costume. Darth Vader even joined our set as we neared the end of the parade, processing and wheeling with us through a couple of choruses, light saber in hand.

The local kids danced about a May Pole in the centre of the street, weaving and plaiting their ribbons before we stepped up for our third set of the morning, finishing a great little festival we look forward to each year.

Thanks as always to the Benalla Caledonian Highland Pipe Band for playing 100 Pipers for us to dance to. It's a great thrill to have pipes and drums play for us and the effect is visible in our posture and spring as we dance.

Notes for teaching Morris at a 21st birthday;

1. Arrange yourselves in groups of 4.
Thats 4, not 7... Oh she's your girlfriend and he's got your beer? Well, umm, why don't you 3 come over here and join this guy.

2. Stars.
Form a circle in your group of 4 and put your right hand into the centre so that you are holding onto each other. That's the other right hand, everyone. Err ... put your beer/champers in your left hand and put your right hand in ...umm, OK that might work but you'll have to skip backwards. You can't skip?? Is that because you're pissed or you just don't know how to?? Oh, I see.. 4" heels would make that awkward..

Now, while you're holding hands in a circle, skip forward .. clockwise .. altogether for 4 steps .. umm, OK stop now.

Now turn and put the left hand in so we can turn anticlockwise. Ready? Ski.... STOP!!! Maybe we can just skip round twice by the right then, OK???

3. Clapping
You'll all need to put your drinks down. .. Umm .. OK try not to spill too much on the floor. Now, clap right hands with the person opposite .. umm, no, not your girlfriend, the other opposite. Can you skip while you do that? No?? OK just stand still and do high fives then, I guess that will be OK. Now turn to face the .. No, on the other hand, just keep clapping with .. err!

English Ale - Mylor SA

Home again and back to earth after a great English Ale in the Adelaide Hills. Thanks all round to Hedgemonkey Morris and Hot For Joe for their hospitality, to Bron for her brilliant organisation of the weekend and to everyone who came along;
It looked to be a promising weekend when Friday evening's venue, the Wheatsheaf hotel, had Mountain Goat Surefoot on tap.
Saturday morning was spent enjoying the idyllic Bridgewater pub garden. Lots of dancing was had, including mixed sets with South East North West and former Adelaide Lancashire Witches, a double set of Bunch of Fives with Longford and then a triple set of Greywell Tunnel for all who were able.
A short trip around the hills to Mylor and the dancing continued with Dani's Bakewell Tart having its first outing here in a tent raised specially for us, outside the main event hall.
Our performance of Ducks in the Privy went down brilliantly. Clogs on a timber floor always seem to bring our knees up higher and sharper.
Sunday afternoon continued in the same fashion til most of us leapt aboard a bus for the airport, grinning from ear to ear at the avenue of hankies we received from Hedgemonkey as we boarded the bus.
Thanks to all who made it a great weekend, especially Christian for joining us in Saturday night's processional on melodeon.

Accommodation at Candlebark Farm - with heated ensuites!
Tour bus transport all weekend, with breakfast on Saturday and Sunday and dinner Saturday night provided.

The tour bus will leave the city at 8pm, and everyone is welcome to join us at the Charles Dickens Tavern (290 Collins St) from 6pm! We will be returning to Melbourne by about 3.30pm on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday foot-ups in Healesville include dancing on the old railway platform, farmers market and in the regenerating forest, as well as visits to the White Rabbit, the new boutique brewery and the well stocked Healesville Hotel, with foot-ups on Sunday being organised in the winery area of the Yarra Valley.

There will be an ale Saturday night, with catering organised by the famous Brandragon Catering Pty Ltd, ably assisted by the other Vic sides (and anyone else who wants to volunteer instead of drink beer!!).

$100 per head
$300 per family (2 or more children under 14).

A $40 deposit is due by September 6th, with the balance due by October 2nd.

Sounds of Music 2009, Diggers Rest

Brandragon had intended to dance out in Marysville at the town's festival, but the recent fires have turned a once beautiful main street into a stark, ashen ghost of its former self. Instead, at the invitation of the Britannia Morris Men, the Dragons joined them at the Diggers Rest "Sounds of Music" on the northern outskirts of Melbourne, an event now dedicated to those affected by the bushfires.

Between performances by the Sunbury Divas and Bush Wahzee, the sides turned out for two dances each on the timber floor of the hall and were pleasantly surprised by the calls for an encore. Not wanting to impede the laying out of refreshments, we declined and made our way offstage.

Eager to dance more, we set up outside the nearby Sports Club. The Britannia Men were immediately beset by locals keen to get in on the action and bravely took two of the lads into the set and ran them through Balance the Straw, much to the amusement of the gathering crowd who shouted encouragement at the two lads as they clashed their sticks with gusto.

The crowd, impressed by these antics, invited us into the Sports Club to perform for all and sundry, where both sides were joined by the local 'fool' (who actually did a pretty good job of hamming up the action whilst staying out of the path of the dancers). A hat was passed around for charity and donations were generously forthcoming.

The afternoon concluded with a relaxed footup at 'The Terrace' in Sunbury, much to the amusement of some of the Sunbury Divas who'd escaped there after their performance.

Thankyou to the Britannia Morris Men, it was an enjoyable afternoon; a relaxed gig with bemused, appreciative audiences. As ever, special thanks go to the lucky lass who played the role of the Rose for BMM.

What is morris?

Morris dancing is English folk dancing.
To be more precise it's a range of folk dancing styles which differ as you travel from one town to the next, let alone one shire to the next!

Brandragon dance the Northwest style, from the areas around Lancaster, down to Chester and across into the West Riding of Yorkshire.

It is linked to the holidays of the industrial towns of the region, hence the wooden soled clogs that we wear, typical work-a-day footwear for the day.
Of course at the time they probably wore their Sunday best, leather soled shoes, but the clogs are a curiosity and make such a great noise that they've been revived.

Other Morris dancing styles include Border, Cotswold, Molly and Rapper.

Cotswold is the most common type, danced with a pad of bells on each shin, and then using hankies or long sticks (roughly 3' or 90cm long)

Border is from the Welsh border regions and is typically danced in a rag coat, using a string of bells on the ankles and with a blacked face for disguise.

Molly is from the east of England, often danced with a blacked face. It's loud and stompy and shares many facets with Northwest and Border.

Rapper uses timber or steel 'swords' which the dancers then weave in and about, making patterns whilst holding onto the swords end to end in a circle. Rapper comes from the north-east of England.

Brandragon are available for performance or workshop by arrangement, with a store of dances that can be taught to the enthusiastic of all ages. Our repertoire consists of set dances for anywhere between three and twelve performers. We are happy to dance on grass, stone or timber, as long as the surface is level and free of pitfalls.

Live music is provided by our own musicians on whistle, melodeon and drum, with the added advantage that we require no amplification.

We are also more than happy to run a workshop for you, teaching you the basic steps and figures to one of our dances, giving you the opportunity to learn a simple, energetic dance form. We regularly teach dances at our performances both to children and adults, and have run workshops at major events, including the National Folk Festival and Woodford Folk Festival.

We can be booked for a single performance slot, or for full or half days. We are generally happy to stay overnight if festivals run for multiple days.

Practice

We practice every Monday night at the Clifton Hill Hotel, 89 Queens Parade, Clifton Hill. It's next to the Taco Bill. You can catch the number 86 tram and get off at stop 23. This drops you right outside. Or you can catch a Hurstbridge or an Epping train to Clifton Hill station and walk from there. If you're driving there's normally plenty of parking. Practice starts at 8pm, out in the Emerald Room (it's the back room, or ask at the bar).
